The Commission has approved co-financing of several innovative projects of strategic importance for the EU as part of the IPCEI Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI CIS) mechanism. The programme, aimed at supporting the achievement of digital independence of the European Union from other world economies, will provide financing in the total amount of EUR 1.2 billion to 19 companies from 7 member states. The beneficiaries of the initiative include Deutsche Telekom, Orange, SAP, Siemens and Atende Industries from the Atende Group.

Under the IPCEI-CIS programme, member states have committed to provide EUR 1.2 billion worth of public support for the development of cloud technologies and services. The selected projects are expected to support highly innovative industrial implementations of advanced cloud processing and Edge-IoT technologies.

IPCEI (Important Projects of Common European Interest) is an EU mechanism that allows for preferential financing of innovative projects of strategic importance for the EU, making use of all sources of financing, including EU and national financing. It is one of the key instruments supporting the new economic policy, European Green Deal and the EU’s competition policy. Projects selected under the IPCEI mechanism are characterised by a high level of innovation and positive impact on the environment while contributing to the improved competitiveness of the entire European industry.

Poland joined IPCEI-CIS in March 2021. The project submitted by Atende Industries – one of more than ten approved by the European Commission – concerns the development of the TStorage database for scalable and efficient collection of data from IoT devices such as smart meters.

As the Internet of Things and Big Data analytics become increasingly more common, the technology giants from the U.S. and China have been working on proprietary non-relational databases (NoSQL), on which their cloud services are based. Due to limited access to this technology and its strategic importance for ongoing projects, Atende Industries has decided to develop from scratch its own NoSQL database named TStorage. After a few years of development works, the solution has already found practical application in smart power systems, as part of the projects implemented by Atende Industries in Poland for Energa Operator. Further development is necessary to enable widespread use of the TStorage database in other applications.

“The selection of our TStorage solution as a project of strategic importance for the EU under the IPCEI-CIS initiative is a great honour for us, and also an excellent evidence of the growing role of Polish technology companies on the European market. However, as the development of innovative technologies is both time- and fund-consuming, such solutions are commercialised and marketed almost exclusively by the biggest technology companies from outside the EU. I believe that with the IPCEI-CIS mechanism, we will be able to develop and widespread the use of our TStorage in many sectors: smart power systems, smart farming, aviation and aeronautics, and even in space industry applications. The key strengths of the TStorage database are its performance and scalability that allow for analysing Bid Data in real time”, says Paweł Pisarczyk, CEO, Atende Industries.
